The Horticultural Society usually arranged an annual flower show, but it did not take place in 1915. The society did, however, arrange a large sale of flowers and other items as a fundraiser in August.
At the sale, the society’s president, Clement Armstrong, a coal agent, introduced Lady Ewart, who opened the event. Stalls offered flowers, vegetables, textiles, refreshments and guessing competitions. Music was provided by the Eskdale Orchestra and everything had been sold by 6 pm, raising £21 6s [£1840 in 2024].
