John Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch, had vast landholdings in England and Scotland, including in the Langholm area. Scottish properties included Drumlanrig Castle in Drumfriesshire, Bowhill House in Selkirkshire, Dalkeith Palace in Edinburghshire and Eildon Hall in Roxburghshire.
His English properties included Boughton House in Northamptonshire and Montagu House (demolished in 1950) in Westminster, London.
