There were six woollen mills operating during the war (in order of size):
Woollen mill manufacturing was a precarious business and six earlier mills had failed:
- Whitshiels. 1797-1872. Originally a cotton mill. Owned by Byers (see below) from 1866 but destroyed by fire.

- Anderson’s. 1854-1869. Owned by Adam Anderson. Demolished or converted to another use.
- Byers. 1858-1884. Owned by Andrew Byers. Building sold to Robert Milligan in 1889 which became Milligan’s/Buccleuch Hall, an entertainment venue which later included a cinema. Damaged by fire in 1950 and demolished.


- Wauchope. 1861-1896. Originally owned by the Bowman family. Destroyed by fire. Eskbank house was built in 1870 for George Bowman who died two years later, with Eskbank becoming the manse for the Episcopal Church.


- Glendinning. 1866-1878. Originally owned by John Glendinning. Used from 1905 by the Telford family, joiners and electricians. Demolished in 1990s.

- Rosevale. 1869-1871. Destroyed by fire. Owned by Hall and Frater who were implicated in financial scandals.
