Langholm New Town was developed in the late 1700s by Henry, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch. By 1915, around 450 former Buccleuch properties had been sold (including grazing land and garden plots) but the 7th Duke still owned over 100 New Town properties.
By contrast, he only owned two properties in the Old Town: a house at the north end and a patch of land.
His New Town properties consisted of:
- 36 houses, including:
- Eskbank: occupied by the Rev John Seaton of the Episcopal Church.
- Nursery Cottage: occupied by John Falconer, the Duke’s baron officer (estate official) who looked after the Duke’s plant nursery.
- 66 land and garden plots.
- 2 stables.
