By 1915 the former large array of properties held in the Langholm parish by the Maxwell family had diminished somewhat, and was solely in the hands of Rev David Maxwell (1845-1916). He was a Church of England vicar who retired to his birthplace of Broomholm house, just south of Langholm.

He had two farms near his house, Broomholmshiels and Rashiel, with a wealthy Dutch ‘gentleman farmer’ Ary Miesegaes as tenant of both.
David Maxwell’s ‘landward’ (country) holdings included ‘shootings’ (grouse moors), ‘fishings’ (riverside ownership) and other land, including the area on which the Langholm golf course was located.

His town properties were all in the Old Town, primarily in John Street and Charles Street (Old), and included the post office at 34 High Street.
