There were two main blacksmith workshops. One was in Parliament Square, owned by John Ewart. His father Lawrence died in 1885, aged 52, when John was five, after which Lawrence’s wife Isabella ran the business until John took it over. It specialised in ploughs, such as the one in the photo below. The sign on the roof says L. Ewart – Smith &c.
John was cornet in 1903 and provost in 1940-1948.
Brothers Robert and David Jeffrey had a blacksmiths’ workshop on Drove Road which belonged to their uncle John Telford until he died in March 1915. In the photo below Robert is third from left and David is on the right.
