Cinema provided distraction, news and propaganda during the war years, with Charlie Chaplin’s silent movies being a particularly popular form of entertainment.

Music was provided by five bands, various choirs, an amateur dramatic society and visiting orchestras, often in association with fundraising.

Theatre was mainly by visiting troupes during the war.

Almost all competitions against clubs outside the town were cancelled. Some local competitions continued for bowls and golf. Angling and some grouse shooting took place. Miniature (small bore) rifle shooting was encouraged.
