Robert Smith was the pastor of the EU Congregational Church, initially as minister elect (1913-1916) while he was completing theological studies, then as minister after inauguration (1916-1918).
The son of a plasterer, he grew up in Kirkwall, Orkney. He married Ethel Viney, the daughter of a railway signalman, in 1916. In 1918 he was asked to establish a new Congregational Church in King’s Road, Rosyth, Fife. Later he and Ethel moved to Kirkwall.
