  1. Introduction
  2. New roles
  3. Conclusions

Much has been written about women in the workplace (i.e. outside family households) in the context of the war. The objective here is not to cover this but instead to highlight what was published in the local newspaper on the topic in 1915. It is entitled ‘women and paid work’ to distinguish between paid employment and the considerable amount of volunteering work during the war, e.g. in the Red Cross hospital, covered under ‘Town support‘.

Munitions factories, conductors, drivers, postal workers, typists, land army.
Expanded roles: nursing, teaching.
